July 28 to August 20 2011 Scientific curator: Noëlle Giret, Honorary General Curator

Neither man of the theater nor connected to the capital and to his places of representation. Actor, director and manager of his own company, Jean-Louis Barrault successively occupied and invested more than about fifteen Parisian places to involvehis art, search there for a " total theater ".

From théâtre de l’Atelier at the station of Orsay where he installs a wooden capital over service ways, to Comédie-Française which he leaves with his wife Madeleine Renaud to establish the Company Renaud-Barrault to the " theater under trees " of Marigny, and to the big room of the Odeon transformed by removable vellums through the Elysee-Montmartre which alternates matches of wrestling and representations, finally till to the ice rink of the Palace of Ice transformed into theater of the Traffic circle, Jean-Louis Barrault was a passenger in transit, making his the currency of

During his numerous "transhumances", he shows capacity to adapt traditional theaters to the requirements of his choices of directory by the creation of small susceptible spaces to support new playwrights and the multidisciplinarity of his activities, the concerts, the conferences, the readings or the recitals of poetry. He appropriates the most diverse buildings, models them at its convenience and transform them in a " house of the theater ", welcoming and warm, meeting place with the public and of exchanges with the creators as Pierre Boulez, Jean Cocteau or still Bernard Zehrfuss.

The exhibition is thus an invitation to follow Jean-Louis Barrault in its Parisian trip, gilts of the Italian-style theate, in the most improbable places in which he invents a new theater.
