899 housings

The exhibition presents nine entries to the architecture competition for the construction of 899 housing units in Paris and illustrates the sometimes unexpected and fresh responses to a variety of uses including student accommodation, social housing, assisted living units, as well as mixed use, social housing with housing associations, and residential coupled with commercial space. The competitions, sponsored by public and private contractors, were recently judged and included entries from 53 young international architectures practices. The exhibition includes all of the competition entries. Each one of these commendable projects - be it for 12 or 350 housing units – aims to make the most of local urban challenges in order to enhance the project and sometimes to propose new usage variety. Each entrant demonstrated a very conscious effort to build as ecologically responsible as possible. In order to respond to this need, all manner of approaches were adopted all the while taking the Parisian climate into consideration: geothermal foundations, photovoltaic facades, solar panels to produce hot water and green roofs. Therefore, this exhibition provides an insight into the work carried out by architects and contractors in order to respond to the core issues of housing while the winning projects etch out new cityscapes for Paris.
