To grasp in hindsight the importance of Fernand Pouillon's work (1912-86), we need to know something about the problems facing France in the 1950s, a period when the need for housing was the major social issue. Turning necessity into achievement, by 1961 Pouillon had already designed remarkable housing estates in the Parisian suburbs of Pantin, Montrouge, Boulogne-Billancourt and Meudon-la-Forêt.
In addition, the exhibition pays tribute to a paradoxical architect, a figure whose worth was recognized by his peers, grudgingly or otherwise.
