This exhibition aims to articulate and disseminate a vision of the future of the city of Paris formed together with its residents through compelling depictions of daily life in the French capital in 2050. Its primary goal is to construct collective narratives that illuminate the city’s transformation.
Since its inception, Paris has constantly been reinventing itself in response to economic, societal, and cultural shifts. The city's capacity to navigate the challenges of the twenty-first century will hinge heavily upon our collective ability to come up with novel solutions and lifestyles.
In September 2022, the City of Paris embarked on a journey of design fiction, in collaboration with the Caue de Paris (a government-organized body promoting the quality of architecture and urban planning). Through four participatory and creative initiatives, including student consultations open to future professionals of the living environment, writing workshops open to all Parisians, calls for artistic projects, and educational workshops in elementary and middle schools, narratives in diverse forms were cultivated. Contributions from incarcerated individuals at the Paris - La Santé penitentiary further enrich the narrative tapestry.
Through models, drawings, writings, photographs, podcasts, videos, postcards, and artistic installations, myriad visions of Parisian life in 2050 are explored. This eclectic collection fosters dialogue on the city's future within the context of the overhaul Paris's resilience strategy.
These bold, multifaceted, and thought-provoking visions converge in an exhibition showcased at Pavillon de l'Arsenal. Together, they weave a collective narrative that offers tantalizing glimpses into the potential futures of Paris looking towards 2050.
